A sad day for science…

This is some seriously disturbing news. Seven seismologists in Italy were convicted of manslaughter because they failed to predict an earthquake that killed 300 people. I’m not an expert on earth sciences, but even I know that earthquakes are extremely unpredictable. Earthquake swarms are common and do not necessarily predict a “big one”. In my understanding, there is no evidence in recorded history of an earthquake ever being accurately predicted!

This is a sad yet impressive display of ignorance.
